Controls Support Engineer

Centrax are seeking an individual to perform all technical aspects of controls support from remote and on site, upgrades, commissioning activities to ensure the highest quality of support in accordance with Centrax commitments to their customer at all times.

Job Purpose:

The role is multi-disciplined, and includes in depth problem analysis, problem solving, programming on site and from remote. The work is carried out on customer sites and at Centrax Newton Abbot as required.

As a Controls Support Engineer, you must also demonstrate leadership, a willingness to accept responsibility.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Have a proactive approach to troubleshooting/developing and solving issues for power generation control systems (software/hardware and processes). Troubleshooting: -
  • Problems with current control systems comprising HMI/SCADA/PLC/Protection Relays/AVR’s and ancillary equipment.
  • Control systems wiring and interfaces with customer equipment.
  • Using the tools provided to assist with downtime events impacting Centrax/Customer operations.
  • Organising and or repairing any malfunctions found. Development work: -
  • Changes to the control and monitoring systems confirming to standards. Following safety regulations to ensure control systems are safe.
  • Creating equipment and systems that help a machine run smoothly. Analyse plant processes, design and implement improvements.
  • Collaborating with design engineers to build better functioning machines and systems.
  • Using listening skills to apply updates according to customers' needs.
  • Plan preventative maintenance. Controls Support: -
  • Ability to read PI&D/schematics etc.
  • Work with others to detect problems and implement solutions.
  • Remote support of Centrax service engineers and customers.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • PLC programming: Siemens step 7 or Allen Bradley Logix (Wonderware and Siemens step 5 would be a bonus)
  • Ability to adequately plan and prepare for allocated tasks both for yourself and for others
  • Principles of a gas turbine
  • Generator control and protection
  • Methods and systems of emissions control
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to pass on knowledge and experience to other engineers
  • Be able to carry out a risk assessment, prepare a method statement, and be able to help others in these tasks
  • Review ‘near miss’/ accident reports and implement corrective action

  • Behaviour: At all times when on company business, demonstrate an acceptable level of professional and mature behaviour
  • Flexibility: Show flexibility to respond effectively to unplanned events such as breakdowns and sudden work plan changes
  • Conduct: Ensure that the Centrax policies on conduct are always followed
  • Appearance: always maintain a smart and professional appearance when on company business, especially when on site, but also in Centrax or Depots.

Controls Engineer Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Control and Systems Engineering, Automation and Control or another relevant discipline engineering. (Electrical, manufacturing preferred)
  • 2-4 years of experience in a related power generation field.
  • Technical proficiency in some control’s software applications. (PLC software “Siemens S7 /Rockwell Studio 5000” / Network knowledge [Modbus/Ethernet) / HMI SCADA software AVEVA Intouch)
  • Strong cause-effect analytical abilities to solve problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, second language will be a plus.
  • MV knowledge systems up to 15kV is desirable.
  • O&M knowledge for alternator AVR and protection relays
  • Internal recruit with Centrax units’ knowledge but no software.
  • External recruit without Centrax package but power unit knowledge and software knowledge (preferred).
