Overview
A grid restoration facility in a power station provides backup power to restart key systems following a total grid failure, known as a blackout. It enables black start capability, allowing the station to operate independently and gradually restore power to the wider grid without external support.
At Enecogen in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Centrax supplied a CX400 14.4 MW generator set, along with all associated equipment, to provide a fully independent black start facility for the site. The installation includes the CX400 genset, a diesel generator, air compressor, gas conditioning skid, and MCC/power distribution container.
When called upon by the local grid company, the diesel generator starts first, supplying power to the auxiliary systems and the CX400 genset. This initiates the process of restoring power to the essential services required for the site’s main gas turbine to operate.
Centrax delivered not only the genset and auxiliary equipment, but also the complete interconnecting cabling and pipework, and carried out the full installation and commissioning of the black start facility.
Key points
- Reliability, to meet the high availability demands of grid restoration support
- Start time, to achieve quick restoration of the power station capability
- Extended scope, including diesel generator, air compressor and MCC distribution, to ensure independence from grid/site power, therefore truly offering a black start capability.
